Whether a conference hall full of people or an empty prayer room, the reality remains the same for worship leader and intercessory missionary Joel Agustin. For him, worship leading and song writing are not about the numbers in the room but about staying focused on Jesus as the audience that matters – the Audience of One.
Joel began classical piano at the age of five and started playing during offerings at the church where he attended. Eventually, he found his way to the Winnipeg Centre Vineyard, where he started leading worship in a home group, then on Sunday mornings, as well as late night sets during all-night prayer meetings.
In 2004, Joel met Brian Creary at a prayer meeting and he became part of the establishment of Sanctuary House of Prayer (SHOP) a couple years later. He was convinced from day one of the call to minister to the Lord first and foremost.
He delved deep into the day and night prayer movement after attending the One Thing internship at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. While there, he led worship for Corey Russell’s Burn classes and sang and played the keyboard for Luke Wood’s team among several other worship teams in the prayer room.
It was during his time in Kansas City that Joel recorded his debut CD “The Journey” – a collection of songs that expressed his desire for Jesus. Since then, Joel has explored a variety of recording formats including doing a live recording of songs with fellow members of Sanctuary House of Prayer, as well as tinkering at home with Garage Band on his laptop.
Joel often talked about getting back into the studio to record another album, but the timing never seemed to be quite right. However, all that changed when Convurgent Music approached Joel in early 2012 to ask if he would be interested in being the first solo artist that we produced? Joel graciously said ‘yes’ and soon afterwards plans were made for him to begin songwriting for his latest musical release (due out Fall 2012).
But Joel is much more than a gifted worship leader and songwriter. Behind the scenes he gives himself to helping build a dwelling place for God’s presence wherever he goes. Whether it is providing leadership to the Prayer Room in Winnipeg, coordinating trips to IHOP-KC for newcomers to the prayer movement, or simply sitting down for a coffee to find out how you are doing, Joel is continuously desiring to help others foster their relationship with Jesus.
We are excited about working with Joel and hope that you take the time to check out some of the other projects that he has contributed to. We think you will enjoy it!
